Teaching & Facilitation

By Simon Rowe

With over two decades of dedicated study in African drumming, my teaching is informed by the Guro tradition of Côte d’Ivoire and a long-running community practice. In these traditions, rhythm is more than performance. It can be a way of gathering people, carrying memory, and marking meaning through song, dance, ceremony, and celebration.

For me, drumming is a social and cultural practice as much as a musical one. It carries story and lineage, marks life transitions, and gathers people through ceremony, procession, song, dance, work and celebration.

I create sessions that are welcoming, musically rich, and carefully held. I work with diverse groups, from organisational teams and leaders to creative practitioners, creating spaces where rhythm becomes a shared language. From that place, steadiness, listening, confidence, and collective momentum can emerge naturally.

Private sessions

Whether you’re organising something for a team, a community, or a small group of friends, I create drumming sessions that are welcoming, musically rich, and carefully held.

Rooted in the Guro tradition of Côte d’Ivoire and long-running community practice, these sessions treat rhythm as a shared language—supporting listening, steadiness, confidence, celebration and collective momentum.

We’ll shape the session together
  • We’ll agree the format and aims in advance

  • Accessible for all levels (no previous drumming experience needed)

  • Venue can be arranged, or I can come to you

  • Instruments provided

Share your group size, location and preferred dates—I’ll reply with a simple proposal.

"I came home buzzing and happy after the drumming lesson. I would definitely do it again, and I wish I could join a lesson every week."

Luciana Almeida

Climate Action Advisor, Ashden Climate Solutions

‘This was a great, fully immersive experience. I loved the way Simon broke down the songs into small sections (which I could just about manage!) and then brought it all together to create some actual music! I would highly recommend joining this session.’

Jo Ecclestone Ford

 Strategic Lead, True Colours Trust

"Simon created a great group atmosphere that balanced fun with some serious percussion.  I would recommend to anyone wanting to find their inner rhythm!"

Alex Seal

Team development workshop

Most interesting lecture. Time flew very fast. They taught us how to work together, move together as a group to deliver one rhythm or note.
